PETALING JAYA: Pua Khein-Seng (pic), the man who invented the pen drive, has been praised by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak for his pride as a Malaysian.

Pua, who was raised in Sekinchan, Selangor, kicked off the 1Malaysia roundtable discussion on “Enhancing local environment for development of IT industry and fostering of IT engineering talents” on Monday.

The 36-year-old is the founder, chairman and chief executive officer of Phison Electronics Corp, which designed and produced the world's first single chip USB flash controller.

The USB device has since become a must-have to store data.

“I was pleased to learn that although he is based in Taiwan, he is proud of his Malaysian roots,” Najib said in his tweet yesterday.

In a question-and-answer posted on Najib's 1Malaysia website, Pua said he was proud to be part of a multicultural and multilingual society as Malaysia, where people lived peacefully together on a prosperous land.

He said Malaysians had the potential and capability to compete with other developing countries.
